UAS Case Study

Jess is a second year student who has been with LUVU as part of her half module Geography degree.
'My school placement was part of the Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme (UAS) which I took as a module on my Geography course. LUVU found my placement and provided the extensive training and CRB checks necessary for me to work in schools. I was placed in a delightful primary school in
This placement reached beyond any standard ‘work experience’ school placement because of the responsibilities I was trusted with. I was given a group of the most able and talented 5 and 6 year-olds and over the course of 10 weeks I planned, organised and taught geography lessons to fit in with their topic work.
The skills I gained from this helped me to understand the ‘behind-the-scenes’ workings of the classroom. I realised how much work and time goes into planning one hour of lesson time, I learnt the importance of being organized, and I gained a better understanding of how to estimate how long an activity will last for in the classroom. Along with the lesson planning skills, I gained a great deal of confidence. Before working with children properly, you feel unsure of how to talk to them; they may be many years younger than you are, but you don’t want to patronise them. As the weeks progressed this became second nature, and I became much more aware of how to communicate with children of such a young age.
The placement provided me with some of the best and most enjoyable experiences I’ve had at university so far, and the list of further wonderful opportunities LUVU have provided me with is endless!'
