Schools' Celebration 2007
Sarah Hinton, 16/08/2007 - 13:39
Nearly 300 children from 9 local primary schools visited the University on Friday 23rd March for a day of art, music and drama activities.
The theme of the day was ‘green and grey worlds’ and children came up with lots of ideas on how to make the world greener and look after the environment. Children produced artwork, made their own musical instruments and made pledge trees full of ideas on how to recycle more. They also put together and painted a ‘Reduce, Re-use, Recycle’ display which you can see displayed on the side of Lancaster University Sports Centre.
The day culminated with a performance in the Great Hall which gave the children the opportunity to show parents their work, share their ideas and sing a song about recycling. The event was attended by the Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Janie Kirkman, who said “It’s very impressive looking at the children’s artwork and it’s clear they’ve had a lot of fun here on campus. This is a brilliant way of teaching them to think of the environment in day to day life.”
LUVU staff and volunteers and LUSU sabbatical officers helped to make the day run smoothly and looked after groups of up to 60 very excited children!
The day is the last instalment of the Creative Arts project, which has been led by a group of 10 student volunteers who have visited 12 schools in the area to deliver Creative Arts workshops.
