Reading Buddy Case Study
Ben is a 2nd year Psychology student who has been on the Better Reading project since October 2006.
"I got involved in the project because I have always enjoyed working with kids. My work in the school mainly consisted of one to one tuition. This involved some picture-assisted reading games, some ‘I spy’ syllable combining games, some rhyming games and reward games. I found that the kids loved to get stickers for their efforts. Also, at this age, kids love to rhyme, so working with them on words that rhyme was always productive!
The school provided all the reading material that was used during the course, with each child using books at the right level of difficulty for them. In addition, I personally designed a few syllable construction orientated tasks, and any materials I needed to be printed and laminated were done for me by LUVU.
I found that the LUVU training provided me with all the necessary information to go into the school and work alongside the children, the teachers and the teaching assistants, as well as teaching me methods and games commonly used when teaching children to read.
Personally I think this is a fantastic project, and the chance to go and work with children is great. The children look forward to you coming in and enjoy you being there. In addition you will actually see their reading improve, which makes you feel pretty good. I enjoyed my time at Moorside, so much so I’m going back next term… the kids made me promise to!"
