Classroom Volunteer Case Study

Sarah Hinton, 16/08/2007 - 11:16

Iian is in his final year studying History. He has had a placement at a local secondary school.

"I worked in Central Lancaster High School with years 8,9,10 and 11 as a general classroom assistant. I helped pupils with their work and made notes for a year 11 pupil who had dyslexia. I also helped to create PowerPoint presentations for lessons.  I brought my own skills into the classroom such as my subject knowledge and computer skills.

The part of the project that I enjoyed most was working with young people and seeing how education worked from the teachers’ point of view. I did face some challenges though, as initially some pupils were reluctant to co-operate, but as time progressed they worked much better with me.

I am now considering training to become a teacher. I think that LUVU is a good organisation which provides opportunities for students to get relevant work experience which will help them when they apply for jobs."
