Activate Case Study

Sarah Hinton, 16/08/2007 - 10:18

James is a third year student majoring in Psychology. He has participated in the Activate project since October 2006.

‘When I first looked through LUVU’s brochure of projects they had on offer, the Activate project seemed to be the only one for me. The training was intense - giving up Saturday mornings to learn leadership skills, organisational skills and the most important skill of learning how to make children have fun without the use of a PlayStation or an X-box.

However, the real challenge begins when you go out to your first school to meet a bunch of children and head your first session with the help of a fellow Activate volunteer. If truth be told it can be quite nerve wracking the first time you go.

A usual session of games with the children will involve a light warm-up, a short skill session followed by the main game which incorporates their new found skill and ability.

It is rewarding to see the improvements made over the course of a term and by the end of it, you even refuse to partake in the games yourself for the fear of being beaten at a game that you taught a group of ten year olds to play in the first place'.
